Animals are by far the biggest victims of humanity. Not only because of the unbelievably huge number of animal victims we have every year, a number far exceeding all the humans who ever died in wars throughout history but also because of humanity's complete lack of respect and compassion for them. We are so willingly blind to their plight and suffering, that we don't even acknowledge their mere existence and the horrors that they endure. For many of us, a chicken is a piece of meat, not a living being with feelings who was tormented from the day she was born until the day she was slaughtered.
Perhaps, the scope of animal slavery has become so unnaturally gigantic and extreme, that it's beyond what we can grasp with our minds, which are designed to understand more contained incidents of suffering and cruelty. But that only makes it more important for those of us with higher levels of compassion and critical thought, to stop participating in these atrocities towards animals so we can show the rest of us the way out. Our duty as humans is to stop participating in atrocities, even if the rest haven't caught up yet.
