One of the most common claims in vegan and vegetarian nutrition is that you can get all the same nutrients from plants if you plan your diet carefully.

But that’s not always biologically accurate.

Certain nutrients exist in forms that the human body can only obtain efficiently from animal foods. For example, true vitamin A (retinol) is only found in animal source foods.

The same is true for vitamin D3, the form used by the body for immune, hormone, and metabolic health.

These differences matter when we talk about long-term nutrition, human biology, and how the body actually uses nutrients.
