1979 AFC Championship Game
On January 6, 1980, the Oilers were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium for a spot in Super Bowl XIV. Late in the third quarter, with the Steelers leading 17–10, Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini threw a high pass to the back-right corner of the end zone. Renfro made a spectacular leaping catch over Steelers cornerback Ron Johnson, seemingly dragging both feet clearly in bounds for a game-tying touchdown.
The official closest to the play initially made no signal. After a lengthy conference between the officials, side judge Donald Wedge ruled the pass incomplete, claiming that Renfro did not have complete control of the ball before going out of bounds (or that he juggled it). The decision sparked immediate outrage because slow-motion television replays broadcast by NBC clearly showed that Renfro had firm possession of the ball with both feet down in bounds. Because the NFL did not use instant replay review at the time, the on-field call could not be overturned.
Denied the touchdown, the Oilers were forced to settle for a Toni Fritsch field goal to cut the lead to 17–13. The Steelers regained momentum and went on to win the game 27–13, eventually winning their fourth Super Bowl. The massive public outcry over the blown call became a primary catalyst for the NFL's implementation of the first instant replay system, which was officially introduced a few seasons later in 1986.
