Part 1 of a 5-part series on working with 3D scans in Autodesk Fusion.

Josiah Fallaise of FDF Raceshop shows how he orients 3D scan mesh files in Fusion without using the standard mesh align commands. He works from a scan of a front steering knuckle, building reference planes and sketches directly off the mesh, then constraining the part to the origin so it's ready to model from.

Along the way he covers using sketch constraints to correct for scanner error, capturing tapered ball joint geometry with a revolve, cleaning up messy components and timelines, and mirroring a left side knuckle to create the right one without scanning a second part.

Josiah designs and manufactures suspension components that run on race cars, so these methods are built around parts that have to fit.

To open the design Josiah worked on in the video, go to the Data Panel in Fusion and find the FDF Raceshop folder inside Community Samples. The suspension assembly and other parts are in there.
