Science fiction didn't begin with Star Wars, Dune, or even Star Trek.

Long before those classics appeared, writers like H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon, Arthur C. Clarke, James Blish, and Philip K. Dick were building the foundations of modern science fiction. In this video, I introduce Rocket Summer, a month-long reading event dedicated to exploring the genre's formative years—from the earliest scientific romances through the Golden Age and into the dawn of the New Wave.

We'll travel through four decades of classic science fiction:

Week 1: Science Fiction Through 1939
Week 2: The 1940s
Week 3: The 1950s
Week 4: The 1960s

Along the way we'll encounter forgotten classics, influential short stories, visionary novels, and some of the most imaginative ideas ever put on paper.

Whether you're a lifelong science fiction reader or completely new to the genre, Rocket Summer is an opportunity to discover the books that built the future.

Recommended authors include H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Olaf Stapledon, John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, James Blish, Philip K. Dick, Frank Herbert, Ursula K. Le Guin, Samuel R. Delany, and many others.

Join us as we explore the best science fiction you've never read.
