Why Dont You Do Right? (originally recorded as Weed Smokers Dream) is an American blues and jazz-influenced pop song written by Joseph Kansas Joe McCoy in 1936. A minor key twelve-bar blues with a few chord substitutions, it is considered a classic womans blues song and has become a standard.
One of the best-known versions of the song was recorded by Peggy Lee and Benny Goodman on July 27, 1942, in New York. Featured in the 1943 film, Stage Door Canteen, it sold over 1 million copies and brought her to nationwide attention.
Lee often stated that Greens recording was influential to her music. In a 1984 interview she said, I was and am a fan of Lil Green, a great old blues singer, and Lil recorded it. I used to play that record over and over in my dressing room, which was next door to Bennys. Finally he said, You obviously like that song. I said, Oh, I love it. He said, Would you like me to have an arrangement made of it? I said, Id love that, and he did.
Why Dont You Do Right? was not Goodman and Lees biggest hit. However, it reached number four on the Billboard charts and defined Lees sultry and rich vocal style early on in her career. Lee married guitarist Dave Barbour and left Goodman in 1943. She intended to retire from the music industry and focus on homemaking, but she continued receiving offers to return to the music world, largely due in part to the success of Why Dont You Do Right? The song is about two boys (Me and Julio) who have broken a law, although the exact law that has been broken is not stated in the song. When the mama pajama finds out what they have done, she goes to the police station to report the crime. The individuals are later arrested, but released when a radical priest intervenes.
The meaning and references in the song have long provoked debate. In a July 20, 1972 interview for Rolling Stone, Jon Landau asked Simon: What is it that the mama saw? The whole world wants to know. Simon replied I have no idea what it is... Something sexual is what I imagine, but when I say something, I never bothered to figure out what it was. Didnt make any difference to me.
More recently, in October 2010, Simon described the song as a bit of inscrutable doggerel, while the radical priest has been interpreted as a reference to Daniel Berrigan, who was featured on the cover of Time on January 25, 1971, near when the song was written.

Space Oddity is a song written and recorded by David Bowie. It was first released as a 7-inch single on 11 July 1969. It was also the opening track of his second studio album, David Bowie. It became one of Bowies signature songs and one of four of his songs to be included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fames 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The song is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut, and was released during a period of great interest in space flight. The United States Apollo 11 mission would launch five days later and would become the first manned moon landing another five days after that. The lyrics have also been seen to lampoon the British space programme, which was and still is an unmanned project. Bowie would later revisit his Major Tom character in the songs Ashes to Ashes, Hallo Spaceboy and possibly the music video for Blackstar.
Space Oddity was David Bowies first single to chart in the UK. It reached the top five on its initial release and received the 1970 Ivor Novello Special Award for Originality. His second album, originally released as David Bowie in the UK, was renamed after the track for its 1972 re-release by RCA Records and became known by this name.
