Perhaps one of the most eerie features of Warsaw Poland, is that its battle scars have gone untouched in many places. In this episode of Kult America, I explored the city to find what WW2 artefacts have remained, and in some cases are overlooked. We saw a bullet ridden wall, a hole in the sky which use to be someones kitchen, a bombed water tower, and bunkers on a train platform. This experience was a lot to take in, its amazing how casually the world goes on in light of such obvious evidence of war.

LOT Flight 5055 was an Ilyushin Il-62M of LOT Polish Airlines that crashed in the late morning hours of Saturday, May 9, 1987. The event happened in the Kabaty Woods nature reserve on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland. The flight prepared to leave Warsaw to San Francisco International Airport via New York Citys John F. Kennedy International airport when it encountered multiple catastrophic events with the numbers 1 and 2 engines as well as the elevator shortly after departure. All 183 passengers and crew on board perished in the crash. The accident was the deadliest of any involving an Ilyushin Il-62, the deadliest to occur on Polish soil, and the deadliest aviation accident of 1987.(Source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOT_Flight_5055)

When I wonder around Warsaw and Poland in general, I am amazed at how many abandoned buildings I find. I’m not much of an urban explorer but I’m curious about the small details left behind by the previous inhabitants. Some have told me that these buildings are abandoned as a result of the communist system, others have told me that the some buildings once belonged to jewish landlords whom were either murdered by the Germans during the second world war or fled Poland for their safety. In this episode of Kult America, we explore Berlin’s untouched battle scars and hunt for remaining elements of the second world war, such as national eagles and swastika’s. Various locations of the city are still covered in bullet holes and damage, Including the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, The Berlin Dom, Victory Colum, Neue Wache, Zeughaus, anhalter Bunker Museum, Flank towers, and the famous Olympic stadium which has the last remaining swastika’s in Berlin. What struck me the most was that the Germans took serious effort in covering up the symbols of their past but left war scars, perhaps a smart reminded to prevent history from repeating itself.

I remember the first anniversary of September 11th, one year after the horrific terrorist attack took place in New York city. I was in Nowy Targ Poland at the time, visiting with a friend. She switched to show me a tribute that Polish fire fighters were giving to American fire fighters. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing, a group of Polish fire fighters were singing the American national anthem. I was so touched by their gesture and impressed by how powerfully people could unite in the eyes of tragedy.
Since that time much has changed, America’s reputation has changed, and it made me wonder if this unity still remained, I wondered what Polish people would tell me about that horrific day, do they still care? or has this already become an abstract American disaster?
