After the Allied landings on Normandy and their subsequent trek into the German heartland, the retreating Wehrmacht blew up every bridge across the Rhine River. Every bridge. So imagine the surprise among Lieutenant Karl Timmermann and his men when they stumbled upon the intact Ludendorff Bridge in the small German town Remagen. What followed was a furious battle for the bridge - the Americans attempting to capture and preserve it, and the Germans attempting to destroy it.
