The Dutch East India Company (VOC) sought total economic domination, but at a horrific human cost. 🚢 In 1621, Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen orchestrated a genocide on the Banda Islands to secure a monopoly on nutmeg. 15,000 Bandanese lived on the islands before the Dutch arrived; after the massacre and forced deportations, only about 1,000 survived.
