This is how Edward and Emilia first met. Em could rarely go out due to her being very sickly for most of her childhood, so she spent most of her time at home researching ancient artifacts. She wanted to find one that could make her immortal (since due to some prior events in her life, she became extremely afraid of death). While at first she genuinely loved Ed, she eventually realized that he could be useful to her, and began well.... not being the best partner possible. Their relationship already started to sour by the time they got married.
