Joniversity | The Arab Spring (Pt1) - Allah, Leftists, Economy and Lessons from History @Joniversity | Uploaded July 2012 | Updated October 2024, 10 minutes ago.
A rational analysis and commentary with an historical perspective of the Arab Spring without regurgitating everything you have already heard in the media. Including snippets from professors, Arab media, current new segments and data gathered in opinion polls. Trying to figure out who won and who lost in the long and short term, will the power of Islam or tyranny prevail over democracy, a little about the hurdles facing the new Islamist regimes and the Muslim Brotherhood, including the role of the west and some good old bashing of diehard lefties and right-wingers.

=== Clarification Regarding Reasons for Popular Revolutions===
Yes, the anti-western undertone was there, but it was there for over 50 years. And it's no coincidence that the Arab Revolt erupted during the worst economic recession the world has ever seen since the 30's, as well as droughts, failing crops, etc. So as I've said reason number one is money, or rather prosperity, food, etc. However there are two other common denominators of historical revolutions:
1) Hope: Which usually starts when tyrants loosen their grip and promise reforms, which sparks hope in people... and with hope comes disillusion, and with disillusion comes trouble... And if you'll read back then you'll see that in the past ten years (mainly under pressure from the west), Arab regimes have embarked on political reforms... at least in appearance.
2) Information: Once you let information roam free, that's when the powers at be are in real trouble! In the European spring of nations it was literacy and the telegraph, in 1968 Prague revolt against communists it was western TV and radio broadcasts, and today, in the Arab Spring and elsewhere it's satellite dishes and the internet.
