It’s a nasty day in Johnson City, but I felt the need to get out to Metro-Kiwanis Park.
The park provides 15 acres of green space right in the heart of town off Knob Creek Road. Created in 1972, the community park includes a concession area and restrooms, two picnic shelters, picnic tables, a playground area, and two lighted softball fields.
Metro-Kiwanis Park also includes a reservable picnic shelter for gatherings and events, in case you have anything coming up.
One of the park’s most prominent features is the Friendship Garden, a 3-acre area created to recognize Johnson City's participation in Sister Cities International.
Johnson City's sister cities are Guaranda, Ecuador; Ronneby Sweden; and Rybinsk, Russia. The garden is home to “Junaluska,” an impressive, 30-foot carving honoring American Indians. The sculpture, carved from chestnut oak, was created in 1986 by sculptor Peter Wolf Toth.
Metro-Kiwanis Park is located at 817 Guaranda Drive in Johnson City near Freedom Hall Civic Center, visit when you find the time.
