The apology came before the assault. That is what makes this case so disturbing.
He told her he was sorry for what he was about to do. Then said he had to do it anyway.
That apology is worth pausing on. He knew what he was doing was wrong. He said so out loud. But in his mind the apology absolved him of it. What he was really saying is that he was entitled to it. That she owed him. That as her boyfriend in a position of authority it was simply expected of him.
She said no repeatedly. She tried to push him off. He told her she was not going until he was finished.
That is not an apology. That is a confession with extra steps.
