With all the news about Trump’s aggression toward Venezuela and his threats toward other nations, including Greenland, and the outrage with what happened yesterday in Minnesota, there’s something else he said a week ago that flew under the radar. Specifically, Trump made a post to Truth Social on New Year’s eve in which he made a strange remark that may have hinted at something to come. Here is what he said.
“We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact. Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in. We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again - Only a question of time! It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made??? President DJT”
The part that clearly stands out in Trump’s statement is his reference to how the National Guard will come back in a different and stronger form. What makes that strange is because the very same day of Trump’s post on Truth Social, a strategy document for the Department of Homeland Security was leaked to the Washington Post, and it detailed what is described as a “wartime push” to add to ICE’s workforce.
According to this 30-page internal document, the Department of Homeland Security is pouring more than $100 million into recruiting new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and is specifically targeting gun-rights advocates and military enthusiasts.
The goal is to hire more than 10,000 new employees, a 50% increase from the current workforce. The marketing campaign is being directed at specific demographics, including those who
• attended UFC fights
• listened to patriotic podcasts
• showed interest in guns and tactical gear
Furthermore, the strategy is to “flood the market” with millions of dollars in spending for Snapchat ads, as well as influencers and live streamers on Rumble, which is, of course, the video platform very popular with hardcore Trump supporters.
Under the strategy, ICE would also use a technique known as “geofencing” which sends ads to the phone web browsers and social media feeds of anyone who sets foot near military bases, NASCAR races, college campuses, or gun and trade shows.
The purpose in all of this is to stir up strong patriotic feelings in these new recruits, and indoctrinate them with the belief that America is homeland for the chosen few, and it must be defended no matter what.
In fact, the Department of Homeland Security’s current marketing already includes over-the-top patriotic imagery in ads, including Uncle Sam and photos of the Statue of Liberty, with a call for Americans to defend their home.
One stunning ad showed the Statue of Liberty and the words “Secure America’s Future,” with a German Zeppelin in the background. More specifically, this is the German airship Graf Zeppelin, which made several trips to the U.S. in the late 1920’s, and was commemorated in a well-known postcard from that time period, showing the Zeppelin behind the Statue of Liberty.
It was this image from that postcard that Homeland Security used, along with the words “Secure America’s Future.” We do have to ask what a German Zeppelin might have to do with America’s future.
Other ICE recruitment ads have proliferated across TV, radio, print and podcasts, directing viewers to an ICE hiring website that portrays immigration as an existential threat. The website has a stark message: “America has been invaded by criminals and predators. We need YOU to get them out.”
So what does all of this mean as far as Trump’s New Year’s Eve post about the National Guard coming back in a different and stronger form?
