The modern history of Troy is deeply tied to an amateur German scholar named Heinrich Schliemann. In the 1870s, he eagerly excavated a mound called Hisarlik, discovering nine ancient cities built on top of one another. He claimed the second oldest, Troy II, was Homer's legendary city and famously draped his 16-year-old wife in "Priam's Treasure".
