The Alabama people (or Albaamaha) are an Indigenous nation of the Southeastern Woodlands whose history and culture are deeply woven into the land that eventually adopted their name. Traditionally located near the confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers in modern-day central Alabama, they were a distinct tribe that became a key part of the Upper Creek division within the powerful Muscogee (Creek) Confederacy. While their name labels a state, the narrative of the Alabama people is one of resilience, migration, and cultural adaptation—moving from a Southeastern agricultural society to establishing a new home in Texas. The Alabama name is believed to derive from the Alibamu tribe, possibly translating to "herb gatherers" or "clearers of the thicket," referencing their traditional environmental practices. Traditionally, they were farmers, hunters, and gatherers, cultivating corn, beans, and squash while living in permanent towns featuring rectangular pole-frame dwellings. They were highly organized into matrilineal clans and autonomous towns, which were often functionally divided into "white" towns (responsible for peace and refuge) and "red" towns (responsible for war and military actions).
