The strategic neutralization of the Japanese stronghold at Rabaul represents one of the most sophisticated applications of tactical air power in modern military history. Operating in the South Pacific, Allied command recognized that direct amphibious invasion of the heavily fortified base on New Britain would cost tens of thousands of lives. Under the direction of General George Kenney and the Fifth Air Force, an innovative air campaign was designed to systematically isolate the fortress. Vintage archival film capturing these operations has been upscaled and restored, presenting authentic colorized versions that reveal the harsh environment and relentless pacing of the Southwest Pacific theater.
The operation relied on advancing the bomber line step by step across New Guinea. Clandestine airstrips constructed under immense environmental hardships at Kiriwina, Woodlark Island, and Marilinan provided forward bases for Allied fighter escorts and medium bombers. Before striking Rabaul, Allied forces neutralized the Japanese right flank at Wewak during massive surprise raids on August 17, 1943, destroying over 100 aircraft on the tarmac. This was followed by tactical close air support during ground offensives at Salamaua, where C-47 transport planes, known affectionately as biscuit bombers, dropped critical rations and ammunition to troops navigating impenetrable jungle terrain.
Subsequent operations severed enemy supply networks through targeted strikes on Hansa Bay, Alexishafen, and a month-long barge-hunting campaign that destroyed nearly 100 coastal supply vessels. Simultaneous combined operations, including amphibious landings at Bulu Plantation and a historic airborne drop by paratroopers at Nadzab, isolated the major base at Lae. With the fall of Lae and Finschhafen, Allied air forces focused their full strength on New Britain. On October 12, 1943, an armada of 326 aircraft launched a low-altitude strike against Rabaul’s primary airfields at Vunakanau and Rapopo, while Liberators hit shipping in Simpson Harbor. Additional long-range operations extended to Rangoon, Burma, where B-24s struck vital rail, power, and port facilities. This restored chronicle highlights the planning, engineering, and flying skill that defined the South Pacific air campaign.
