On 14 August 1904, Rear Admiral Jessen’s Vladivostok Squadron moved south along the Korean coast in the hope of linking up with the Port Arthur fleet after the battle in the Yellow Sea. Japanese cruisers under Vice Admiral Kamimura were already searching for them, intent on stopping any junction between the two Russian forces. As both squadrons closed off Ulsan in the early light, the opposing plans brought them into contact.
