In this episode of The Aspie World Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Sam Shay to talk about autism, ADHD, neurodiversity, and how comedy can be used to educate and advocate for the autistic community.
We dive into what it means to be “neurospicy,” how autism shows up in real life, and why so many autistic and ADHD individuals struggle with sensory overload, communication, and navigating a neurotypical world. Dr. Sam shares how he uses stand-up comedy to break down complex autism topics into something relatable, engaging, and easy to understand.
We also explore deeper topics like autism diagnosis, ADHD overdiagnosis, genetic testing, and the debate around “fixing” autism vs improving quality of life. This conversation gives real insight into how autistic people think, process information, and experience the world.
If you’re autistic, ADHD, or supporting someone who is, this episode will help you understand the balance between strengths and challenges, often described as “superpowers and kryptonite.”

🌟 Navigating Autistic Burnout: Finding Your Calm 🌟
Does your brain feel like its on pause? Youre not alone. Autistic burnout can make everything feel offline, and recognizing this is the first step to recovery. Understanding and loving yourself during these moments is crucial. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back, be kind to yourself, and let your nervous system reboot. For me, that means indulging in comfort shows, embracing low-demand time, seeking out quiet spaces, enjoying snacks, making no big decisions, and most importantly, feeling no guilt.
Yes, even binging on Love Island on Netflix can be therapeutic if it helps your autistic brain unwind. Remember, burnout is not laziness. ADHD fatigue is not failure. Sensory shutdown is not weakness. It’s okay to need more recovery time. Everyday tasks can take a lot more energy than people realize, especially if youre autistic or have ADHD.
Learning about autistic burnout, sensory overload, executive dysfunction, and nervous system recovery was a game-changer for me. It helped me halt self-imposed pressures before hitting a crash. By granting myself permission to recharge, Ive found a balance that respects my neurological needs.
