🥊 Some movie props have great provenance. Others accidentally fund koala healthcare and become a recurring late-night television joke.
Russell Crowe wore this heavyweight championship jockstrap as James J. Braddock in Cinderella Man (2005), including during the film’s climactic Madison Square Garden fight.
Then things got weird.
John Oliver then bought it at Russell Crowe’s 2018 Art of Divorce auction and donated it to Alaska’s last Blockbuster Video store. Crowe responded by using the proceeds to help fund the very real John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward at Australia Zoo.
From there, the jockstrap became the center of what Last Week Tonight dubbed “The Jockstrap Saga”, popping up across multiple seasons, interviews, awards speeches, and even reuniting with Crowe on the show.
