The 587, She's A Survivor is a promotional song put together by Lejo Harmeson in 1984 for the Indiana Transportation Museum to support the first restoration of NKP H6-o Mikado 587. It was put out as a 45' single by Harmeson in 1984 & was available alongside the other merch created to support the restoration & could've been purchased via mail order for a time. It went out of print many years ago and has become very difficult to find copies of nowadays. I was lucky enough to find a copy in December of 2021, Purchased it & subsequently digitized it very quickly following its arrival. This to my knowledge is the best quality version of this song now available today. It was also featured in a video, produced by the ITM Steam Department called "The Return Of NKP 587, "She's A Survivor" that documented 587's rebuild, test runs & it's 1988 operating season. The 587.. . she's a survivor! resulted from a request by the Indiana Transportation Museum for original music to accompany an audio-visual program describing the restoration of Nickel Plate Road No. 587. The historic steam locomotive, built in 1918 and retired in 1955, had been displayed in an Indianapolis city park for 28 years prior to its removal in October 1983. Full restoration of No. 587 is now in progress, and plans call for the locomotive to pull steam excursion trains from the renovated Indianapolis Union Station to destinations throughout Indiana and other states. This song, designed to entertain its listeners and honor the role of the steam locomotive in developing America, will also serve to increase public awareness of the Indiana Transportation Museum's restoration program for No. 587 Funds generated through the sale of this record will help No. 587 operate under its own power once more, bringing the magic of the steam locomotive to new generations.
Lejo Harmeson began writing songs at age 16. His portfolio now contains over 60 original songs in various categories. During the past two years he has received Honorable Mention awards for his lyrics in the American Song Festival, an international competition held annually in Hollywood. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and two daughters.
