That's Not a Buffalo! Custer State Park, South Dakota
We didn't quite know what to expect when we went to visit South Dakota's Black Hills. For all we knew South Dakota was nothing but rolling plains and emptiness (although a great deal of it is). The Black Hills surprised us with their beauty and how much there was to do! We stayed there a week and although we did many things, perhaps our favorite adventure was Custer State Park! Custer State Park is a jewel among parks, perhaps the best "state" park we've ever visited. It spans over 71, 000 acres of hills, forest, and jagged peaks. Custer is a naturalists paradise, with a diversity of wildlife to rival places like Yellowstone National Park. Custer has ample facilities to support camping, hiking, day trips for swimming, and wildlife viewing, as well as visitors centers with wonderful activities for kids. The park supports a herd of over 1500 wild Bison, which roam the hills and plains. Each year the "buffalo" are rounded up and surplus animals are auctioned off, to maintain a stable and healthy population for the size of the parks land. This Buffalo roundup is a major event and probably one of the only places left on earth where the thundering of these magnificent animals can be heard as they stampede.
Contrary to popular belief the animals known as "buffalo" on the American plains are not actually buffalo at all, but bison. Buffalo are animals that come from Africa and Asia while Bison are native to North and South America. Bison are at a "near threatened" conservation status yet there are stable populations maintained in places such as Custer that will assure these magnificent animals are around for years to come.
