Peridot is one of the few gemstones on Earth that forms deep inside the mantle, far beneath the crust. It reaches the surface through volcanic activity, which is why this bright green gemstone is usually found around ancient volcanic rocks, creeks, washes, and areas where those rocks have slowly broken apart.
But rough peridot does not always look valuable. Small green grains and crystals can easily be ignored or confused with ordinary minerals.
