Recently, President Obama signed legislation allowing the FDA to FINALLY regulate cigarettes, a product that kills about 400,000 Americans a year and costs the US over $100 billion a year in tobacco-related health costs. Yet until this legislation was signed in June 2009, cigarettes had somehow managed to be less regulated than cosmetics or pet food. How could this be? It took a complete lack of corporate or even human conscience by tobacco companies, the buying off of politicians from tobacco-growing states, and fierce, smart, well-paid tobacco lobbyists like the one Aaron Eckhart plays in the very funny black comedy, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING.
