Ancient philosopher Thales sought to answer the great question of the one and the many—how unity and diversity coexist in the universe. This pursuit led him into metaphysics, the study of ultimate reality beyond the physical world. The Greeks also explored telos, or purpose, asking not just what things are made of, but why they exist.
