How hot is too hot for your child to practice outside?
New Texas heat safety rules require schools to use the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, or WBGT, to determine when conditions are too dangerous for outdoor activities.
Unlike the temperature or heat index on your phone, WBGT factors in temperature, humidity, sunlight and wind. As the WBGT rises, schools may be required to add more water and rest breaks, shorten practices, restrict equipment — or stop outdoor activities altogether.
The rules apply to football, marching band and other outdoor UIL activities.
So what should parents ask their school? What was the WBGT during practice, how often was it checked, and what changes were made because of the reading?
KPRC 2 Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez breaks down what Texas parents need to know about the new heat rules and how they're supposed to protect students for ENOUGH.
