Ocean currents are divided into two types based on the forces that drive them. Most currents in the upper kilometer of the ocean are driven by wind. Mixing, affected by density due to temperature and salinity, drives deeper currents. This video can be used as a demonstration for teachers to view how to implement the activity or for students to view while making predictions, observations, and diagrams. They will learn about the layering of different temperatures and salinities of water and the role of oceans in the formation of weather systems such as hurricanes. Students can identify how the model is similar and different from real currents in the ocean.
