This is not a sponsored video. Crysound offered to send me a unit to play with, and didn't even require me to make a video about it. But how could I not make a video about this intriguing device.

This unit is a demonstrator unit. The final units may have different software and there is the ability to download firmware updates over WiFi.

Mike of Mikeselectricstuff has sacrificed his unit for our betterment. You can see inside (including the microphone array) and his commentary on the circuitry at this link:-

Crysound currently has their camera on presale in the USA at Amazon:-

Check their website for availability in other countries.

Just like thermal imaging cameras, niche test equipment like this tends to be aimed at professional use like factory maintenance, HVAC and power distribution. But at less than 10% of the cost of the Fluke version, this is actually viable for those who have specialist hobby uses.

For me the most exciting discovery was how it locked onto the corona discharge of the air invigorator from 10m away! It's extremely quiet to the human ear and yet the camera could detect it from a significant distance. The on-screen frequency display indicated a high ultrasonic content from the tiny corona discharge at the tips of the needles.

As with other test equipment like thermal cameras, it's useful to understand the nature of what you're looking at. Low frequency sound waves tend to modulate the air in a room, while higher frequency sounds become progressively more directional.

If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.
