hey google, search design over gameplay
google: OK, here's what i found on the web for "design over gameplay" 🤖
i don't think this tower was on anyone's jtoh/etoh 2025 bucket list. as an unexpected surprise, this tower got added to ring 9 to bridge the gap between tobk and tons. while i think a high extreme would have done this much better, this still technically does that as well.
i'm gonna be completely honest, this tower sucks. i'm not kidding when i say this is the textbook definition of design over gameplay. the gameplay for the entire tower is this weird combination of gimmicky and jank, which honestly could not work worse together. some jumps like the one at 1:25 and basically the entirety of 8 outside are prime examples of things you should not do when making gameplay. i really can't fathom as to why the only outside of the tower is by far the hardest part and it's not even close. the only saving graces for this are the design, which is genuinely amazing, especially for 2021, and the fact that this tower is super short. you can get to the 2nd half in 3 and a half minutes on a slightly above average run. it definitely didn't help that i fluked to end of 10 from 5, failed, and didn't get back for another 4 HOURS.
i can't really say i recommend this tower, it's not fun. there's better terrifyings in the game like tomm, towww, tons, etc. just go play one of those instead. might do a guide on this sometime, but i won't promise anything cuz i don't want to play this tower again.

![[Extreme Demon Platformer] Free Solo // Geometry Dash 2.2
this level is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. learning and playing was an absolute blast even if there were times of sheer frustration. i thought at first that this was going to be like 22 trials of pain levels of annoying when i saw there were no checkpoints, but its not like that at all. its consistently fun to play, looks great throughout, and every section is super unique and interesting in their own ways. thoughts on each section:
- The Ascend - genuinely great starting part, its quick, easy, and straight to the point. i also love that purple orb thing at the end its super satisfying. 9/10
- Woodways - step up in difficulty, mainly just spike jumps but also oddly satisfying to do. 8/10
- The Ruins - might be a hot take, but this is the hardest part of the level for me. the corner spike jumps in this part felt much harder than any of the other ones, even the garden, and it took me a long time to get them down. most of this section is those kind of jumps though, so this one is gonna be lower than the others. 6.5/10
- Downtown - probably my favorite section in the level, theres so many good strategies to use and i always found this part fun. 10/10
- The Cliffside - not much to say here, but the boulder thing is pretty neat. the spam at the end is kinda annoying but its not too bad. 8/10
- Garden - what people consider the hardest part to be, this part suffers the same as the ruins, but i dont mind this one as much as the ruins for some reason. 7/10
- Coral Climb - this part looked impossible to me when i first played it, but it actually turned out to be pretty consistent, fun, and i ended up fluking it. 8.5/10
in conclusion, this level is so great and if you have the skill for it, definitely give it a go. probably the best top 1 were ever gonna have.
now that this is done, it would be cool to have the entire top 10 rated platformers done so ill try that in due time. for now im probably gonna relax and do some easier levels to bump my moon count since its kinda lacking rn, ive only been doing extremes and insanes lol.
Top 5 Demon Platformers (at time of upload):
1. Free Solo (Top 1)

not gonna write much but this is probably one of the most frustrating towers ive ever beaten. the gameplay itself is not bad at all but the balancing makes this such a horrible grinding experience. floor 3 is one of the biggest difficulty spikes ive ever seen in my time playing towers, its such a roadblock and caused me so much trouble. theres also that one jump on 5 (4:47) thats like stupidly hard without lodging and lodging is kinda inconsistent. the later floors are pretty hard but theyre all hard so i was less annoyed by them. overall not a fun tower, i dont recommend this unless youre like mid horrific skill or higher and the difficulty spikes dont phase you. also raise this bro this is NOT tocr diff at all its way closer to tocp than it is to tocr.
i recorded a bunch of catas in this game and have yet to upload them, but they probably wont be public. i wanted this one to be public cuz i think its hard enough to warrant it. ill upload the other ones unlisted and put them in a playlist sometime.
enjoyment: 0/10
personal difficulty: high-peak cata at the least bro (11.85 but i could see higher)
