Hiding in pain and wailing when touched, this dog had been hit by a car, her hind leg fractured and partially degloved; her front leg sliced deeply at the top. But as soon as she understood she was safe in the arms of her rescuer, this girl stopped howling and wagged her tail. Unbelievable!

And when we eased her pain with medication, wound dressing, splint and surgery on her forearm wound, she gave us the most beautiful reward: non-stop smiles filled with love throughout the coming weeks of her healing.

$After spine injury, we didnt know if Serena would walk again. Beautiful Serena, her hind legs collapsed, and her front legs held straight and stiff as she struggled to cope with pain. She lifted her head and turned to regard her rescuers with eyes that seemed to implore, Please, will you help me? Her quiet eyes held their believing innocence throughout her arrival in the hospital and physical exam. We found no fractures, but her nerves were bruised. She still had sensation in her toes, but we can never be sure a spinal injury patient will improve. We kept her as comfy as possible for several weeks. He couldnt stand. He couldnt even lift his head. In fact, his pain was so intense he could barely move his eyes. But he could cry, and his sobs alerted neighbors that he was laying there in the rubbish urgently needing rescue. We immediately began wound treatment in the hospital, but he remained unable to stand although he didnt appear to have a fracture. We put him into a protocol of 6-weeks of bed rest to allow nerves to heal and swelling between vertebrae to subside. He couldnt eat without help, and depression, we feared, was setting in.
