First time it happened, was when I was in the underworld. By a total freak accident which killed me in the process. I was trying to flood the Underworld with 4 enormous lakes.
Anyway I noticed a chest and went for it. Wanted to build around it for air pocket and suddenly I was like "wtf...where did all the chests come from?"
Turns out it's a bug, but a good one to abuse if you're too lazy to get the chests through the normal way.
What you need is:
1) A chest placed on ground
2) This is the tricky part: 2 blocks of Obsidian where the chest is placed NOT under it. You have to expirement with lava/water until you get it right. It took me a couple tries until I got it.
3) 1 Obsidian ore inside said chest
Then all you need to do is build around the chest, and mine it, build around, mine it, build around, mine it. Voilà, permanent chest duping and fast too!
This is done with Terraria 1.0.2 . I dunno if it works with former versions or if it will work with future versions!
