At the base of the Higashiyama mountains, near the very important zen temple of Nanzenji is Tenju-An temple. Tenju-An was erected in the early 17th century and is dedicated to the zen master who served Emperor Kameyama in his religious studies.
Tenju-An, like Nanzenji, is very popular for its stone garden and gorgeous pond with its many water lilies.

Completed in 1611 Matsue Castle, a โBlack Castleโ due to its dark and austere exterior is and surrounded by a gorgeous moat and thick wall. It is one of only a dozen original castles left in Japan. That means that unlike many others like Naoya Castle and Osaka Castle, Matsue Castle and itโs main tower have survived to this day through many wars and natural disasters. In 1638 the castle and its fief were assigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan who were relatives of the powerful ruling clan at the time, the Tokugawa.

Founded in 1349 as the first Jishu School temple in Sado, Shokoji is a small little temple tucked away in the back of the little Shukunegi village south of Sado Island. Shokoji has been enshrining the Tokai Benzaiten or the sea-crossing goddess, since its inception and has continuously been worshiped as a guardian deity protecting against shipwrecks, and as a goddess of artistry. Another of Shokoji templeโs most treasured artifacts is its gorgeous Tokai Benzaiten painting donated by the master artist Mahori Hogan Yoshitaka.

On this second part of our video series on Okunoin Cemetery (Koyasan - Wakayama), we wanted to spend some time on some of the old, yet most beautiful tombs and mausoleums of Okunoin Cemetery. It is very difficult for us to describe the unique ambiance and beauty of some of Okunoinโs less visited areas. Often abandoned and neglected these moss covered tombs offer us a weirdly satisfying and reassuring sense of peace. Unlike cemeteries in other countries nothing here feels creepy and visiting the area feels like stepping in the shoes of an historian discovering a long lost civilisation in the middle of a dense forest in a faraway country.
If you ever have the chance to visit Okunoin, make sure to stop and close your eyes for a moment, take a deep breath and let the power of this place replenish your soul with a series meditation exercises, you will not regret it!
