Tonight on the balcony in Tenerife, I’m joined by Clio, Christine and Adam to look at the island’s growing housing problem. Clio checks a few current rental listings in Arona, Adeje and Playa de las Américas, including a one-bedroom apartment advertised at €1,500 a month, and we compare those prices with the wages earned by many local workers.
We discuss holiday rentals and viviendas vacacionales, possible rent controls in stressed areas, social housing, empty properties, foreign buyers and Spain’s proposed 100% property tax. We also ask whether Airbnb is the cause of the problem or simply one part of a much larger shortage.
