In 2005, Andy Stumpf was doing his job in a courtyard when a man lifted an AK-47 out of a window.
He never saw the shooter.
Heard it. Felt it. Landed flat on his back and got dragged out by a teammate.
Eight Americans were wounded on that target.
The bullet hit near his sciatic nerve.
By the time he reached the hospital, his ankle felt like it was being hit with a sledgehammer.
However, the X-ray showed nothing wrong.
Neuropathic pain.
The doctors did not know if the nerve would grow back.
It grows at one millimeter per day.
He spent a year and a half asking what he did wrong before arriving at the truth: you can do everything right and still get surprised.
Twenty years later, he calls it one of the best things that ever happened to him.
It forced him to start planning what came next.
