Over the past decade the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery has placed nearly 70 stone markers commemorating lynchings across America. They include one in downtown Orlando erected by the EJI local affiliate, the Alliance for Truth and Justice, which commemorated the lynching of July Perry and the victims of the 1920 Election Day Massacre in Ocoee. EJI forged a marker to commemorate Arthur Henry, s a 35-year-old Black man who was lynched on Thanksgiving night in 1925, which was dedicated at the Wells’ Built Museum in the neighborhood where he lived, where Dr. Wells issued his death certificate and where his body was prepared for return to Lake City. The ceremony commemorating this dedication will took place over two days in December 2023.
