This video shows make 1 left (M1L) and make 1 right (M1R), as well as a little trick to remember which is which! The two variations are used when it is important to mirror increases, such as around the spine of a shawl, on raglan sleeve shaping, or on a thumb gusset for a mitt. When it isn't necessary to mirror the increases, your favorite variation may be used when a "make 1" or M1 is called for in a pattern.
