I recorded this with my GoPro. Designed like many of my videos to be a “chat.” I cut from medium to tight shots in the editing room. Santa Cruz California Family & Children's Services asked me to help them encourage families to consider taking in a foster care teenager. Whitney is a magnificently articulate storyteller and I feel honored to present my dialogue with her.
Foster teenage girls face a complex set of challenges, often stemming from a range of difficult circumstances that led them to leave their homes. These reasons can include abuse, neglect, family conflict, parental substance abuse, mental health issues, or other situations where their safety and well-being were at risk.
A significant number of teenage girls enter the foster system due to physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or severe neglect.
Issues such as substance abuse, mental illness, or incarceration of parents, can lead to placement in foster care. Severe family conflicts related to issues like divorce or domestic violence, can push a teen into the system.
Foster youth, especially girls, struggle with educational stability. Frequent moves can disrupt their schooling, leading to lower academic achievement and higher dropout rates. Many foster teenage girls experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD due to their traumatic experiences before and during their time in foster care. Girls who age out of the system at 18 often face challenges in transitioning to adulthood, including securing stable housing, employment, and continuing education. They are at a higher risk of homelessness and poverty.
Teenage girls in foster care often struggle with identity issues and low self-esteem due to the instability and trauma they've experienced. They may have difficulty forming trusting relationships and may struggle with feelings of rejection. Frequent changes in foster placements can make it difficult for them to form stable relationships and trust caregivers.
Teenage girls in foster care are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation, including trafficking, due to their lack of stable support systems and their emotional vulnerabilities. While both boys and girls in foster care face risks, girls are more often targeted for sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Behavioral Responses: Girls may internalize their trauma more than boys, leading to issues like self-harm, eating disorders, or depression, whereas boys may be more likely to externalize through aggression or delinquent behavior.
Teenage girls in foster care are also at a higher risk of teenage pregnancy, which can further complicate their transition to independence and adulthood.
