Technology transfer was one of the tools that could support this goal. It offered potential for stronger local production, improved supply security, and expanded access to prevention and treatment. Yet the practical requirements, risks, and complexities involved were often underestimated.
This World Health Summit 2025 Global Health Lab lunch session – co-hosted by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – explored the opportunities and challenges of tech transfers for medicines and vaccines. The discussion was moderated by Manuel Batz (GIZ). It examined why successful technology transfer required time, careful planning, clear communication, an enabling regulatory environment, and robust quality systems.
The Speakers, Farrah Losper (African Vaccine Manufacturing Initiative, AVMI), Rajinder Suri (Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network International, DCVMN), Peter Beyer (Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership, GARDP), and Ariane McCabe (GSK) discussed past experiences, benefits, and risks. They reflected on lessons from global and regional manufacturing efforts and considered how stakeholders could collaborate to build environments that supported effective and sustainable tech transfer.
The session highlighted how coordinated action, long-term investment, and shared expertise could strengthen supply chains and expand access to essential medicines and vaccines.
