In the early 1900s, Igor Stravinsky was approached by Sergei Diaghilev about composing music for a new work by the Ballets Russes based on a traditional Russian fairytale of the Firebird. What he created was a career-launching masterpiece that cemented his name as one of the great 20th- century composers.
