Philosophy Portal | TEACHERS, IDOLS & MASTERS... OH MY! (w/ Javier Rivera, Chetan Anand & Alexander Ebert) @PhilosophyPortal | Uploaded March 2022 | Updated October 2024, 21 minutes ago.

Nietzsche thought that the "last man", who privileged comfort and certainty over the overcoming of man as the meaning of the earth, would find ruling and obeying too burdensome. Hegel thought that working through the lord and bondsman relationship was necessary for free and independent spiritual subjectivity. Here we engage a discussion along these lines of thought. Are relationships where asymmetries appear, specifically here between teachers and students, still worth time and energy? In the information age, where knowledge is freely available to everyone, are not these relationships outdated and antiquated? Do these relationships not lead to complexities and difficulties of idolization and power that we should replace for a more neutral egalitarian model? Here we openly discuss our relationship with knowledge and power asymmetries with teacher and student dynamics, and attempt to think their necessity in our current world.
