Teac X-1000R Reel to Reel
I recently picked up a couple of reel to reel recorders, one of which is this Teac. From 1981, but looks like it could be from the 1990s.
The early 1980’s generally is a good era for electronics and mechanisms. Capacitors are usually in spec and calibrations are generally still good for mechanical devices, but that is my opinion as of 2025.
I had to re-lubricate the mechanism and transport. Needed a new meter bulb, but for the most part it works perfect after a cleanout and deoxit. Speed adjustment was nearly dead on.
A Pioneer RT-707 silver reel-to-reel from 1978 would need a lot of work. I’m not criticizing those (I have two) but transistors go bad on those and all sorts of alignments need to happen to get them to perform to acceptable standards.
Anyways, I’m making recordings and replaying them. And also playing music in real time with the three head time slip, meaning I’m hearing what what recorded a 1/2 second earlier which adds an analog feel to streaming digital music.
