Yuletide is the mid-winter period from Hannuka, through Christmas, to the celebration of Twelfth Night. From the late 1950s through the 1970s it was seemingly obligatory for all artists from Jazz to Punk to make a Christmas album. With Yuletide Treats, Duo Pleyel joins that spirit and tradition, with some of the greatest classical hits for your festive delight. Comprising keyboardists Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya and Richard Egarr, Duo Pleyel begins with three beautiful, transcendental and intimate movements from Franz Liszt’s ‘Christmas Tree Suite’. Then follows ‘For unto us a child is born’ and ‘Hallelujah’ from Handel’s Messiah. No New Year’s celebration is complete without the Strauss family’s ‘Blue Danube’ and ‘Radetzky March’. Finally, they present Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker Suite’. All performed on a Chris Maene Straight Strung Concert Grand, this album is to be listened to at high volume with a large glass of something delicious.

This colourful journey across different times and places marks the first recording of Italian conductor Alessandro Crudele and the London Philharmonic Orchestra for Linn. At the helm of the flamboyant LPO the versatile conductor has recorded a compendium of programmatic works spanning the artistic life of Ottorino Respighi. Starting with one of his first masterpieces, the evocative and at times epic Pini di Roma is a botanical journey through Rome at different times of the day. The more impressionistic, travelogue Impressioni brasiliane, the result of a trip Respighi made in Brazil, is suffused with local music and culture and dates from the mature years of the composer. Much in the same vein, the late ballet Belkis, regina di Saba describes a mythological voyage this time; the little-known work recounts the Queen’s route across the desert to meet Solomon, King of Israel, with whom she is in love.

Phantasm’s innovative new film directed by Ralf Pleger showcases Bach’s Pièce d’orgue, the second section of the organ Fantasia in G, which gives the film its title. Performed by the award-wining viol consort this is the final piece on the third instalment of its highly acclaimed Well-Tempered Consort series.
