In this video, we hear a female Tawny Owl calling in daylight, producing her sharp, piercing “kee-wick” call from deep within the trees.
You’ll also hear the classic nighttime owl sounds that made Tawny Owls famous. The female’s ringing “kee-wick” is answered by the male’s long, wavering “hoo-hoo-oooo,” creating the iconic “twit-twoo” exchange so often associated with woodland nights.
Although Tawny Owls are most often heard after dark, daytime calling does occur - particularly during the breeding season in late winter and early spring. A female may call if disturbed, when responding to a territorial rival, or when communicating with her mate.
