This is how I often tat nowadays. I like to use a little mat and I roll my shuttle on it to wind back the thread instead of winding back with my thumb. I was inspired to try this after discussing it with a tatting friend who said she'd been tatting like this for years. If I'm out and about, I don't carry a mat with me to be able to do this but I do when I'm at home. If I'm at a table, I will just put the mat on the table but if I'm sitting in a chair, I have another mat taped to the top of small box (it's an embroidery threads box) that I put on my lap.
Again, I don't always use the little mat but if I settle down to do a good bit of tatting, I do find this speeds things up!
I make the shuttles I use in my videos and they are available for sale from: etsy.com/shop/lacossette
