My Christmas Tree Edging Pattern is worked in two colours. At one point, the ring needs to be the same colour as the chain so the shoe-lace trick (SLT) is used. Here is a video that shows how I make the SLT so that there is no blip of colour.

Using the SLT does cause a bit of twisting in the tatting which wouldn't otherwise be there but it's a compromise for the flexibility of using colours where you want them.
