Look at these gorgeous green leaves with a beautiful pattern — this is tatsoi, a friend and neighbour of bok choy, and one of the most beautiful greens to grow in autumn. You can eat them leaf by leaf, picking the outer leaves for salads, or cut the whole plant to sauté or lightly roast.
It’s a beautiful late summer and autumn green, but what you mustn’t do is sow it too early. Tatsoi is inclined to flower and attract pests if sown in early summer or spring. These were sown on the 4th of August, which is a really good time to sow these brassica plants.
I can’t bear to cut them because they are so beautiful and still growing. Growth is cleaner this year, with more sunshine, less rain, and therefore fewer slugs prospering. In wet conditions, these leaves are popular with slugs and snails.
The seed came from FantastiskeFro in Denmark — all organic, and highly recommended if you’re in Europe.
Tatsoi grows beautifully in the no dig garden, bringing colour and flavour just as the season cools. A simple sowing at the right time gives steady, healthy growth with very little effort.
