‘The success of any project is not in the final solution, but in the journey by which we get there.’ Engineering Hyundai Commission: Mire Lee: Open Wound at Tate Modern.
#TurbineHall has been transformed. Membranous fabric ‘skins’ wrapped around steel skeletons hang suspended, while in the centre a vast turbine rotates, oozing viscous liquid from silicone tentacles.
Buro Happold was delighted to be part of the team that brought artist Mire Lee’s vision to life. We worked with the artist, Tate Modern and specialist contractor millimetre to reawaken the building’s industrial past, drawing the historic structure of Turbine Hall into the artwork to realise Lee’s fantastical factory of regeneration and decay.
Step behind the scenes with design director Anton Sawicki and associate Will Pearn. Discover how we reactivated dormant features with a #structuralengineering approach defined by #reuse, combining design development sketches with #computationaldesign scripts to engineer a masterpiece.
Hyundai Commission: Mire Lee: Open Wound is South Korean #artist Mire Lee’s first major presentation of work in the UK. The artwork will be in place at Tate Modern until 16 March 2025.
