OI Special Exhibit Members' Lecture: Intentionality and Sevruguin, presented by exhibit curator, Tasha Vorderstrasse, OI
The Armenian-Iranian photographer Antoin Sevruguin produced stunning images of life in late 19th century Iran. His artistic vision set him apart from many of his contemporaries, and his photographs continue to resonate with audiences today. In order to achieve his photographic effects and translate his vision to the albumen print, Sevruguin had to carefully compose many of his photographs. As a result, we can see how Sevruguin intended that late 19th century Iran should be viewed and yet, once these photographs left his possession, these visions became interpreted and re-interpreted, by both the individuals who originally collected them, as well as people in the modern day.
