Decided to pick up Hourglass after seeing SeraHarms' videos and do my first TAS. I did the entire thing in frame-advance, and my rerecord count is huge... I squeezed out every frame I possibly could... Every move I do is for a reason. All of the sword slashes save frames, they're not to show off or whatnot. Doesn't get much better than sub-30 ;D. Hourglass is really awesome.
Rerecords: 2441 ;o
I've put up my Hourglass recording file: http://nitrogen.mine.nu/brains/NikujinTraining.wtf . It's much better to watch than this YT video. The links below are all you should need to play it. Make sure to tell me if you manage to improve it ;).
Nikujin download: ikiki.sokushinbutsu.com/himoji/game.htm (にくじん)
Hourglass download: code.google.com/p/hourglass-win32
50 FPS. Disable Multithreading while playing, enable while recording AVI if possible.
This run uses some new glitches/techniques (mostly only useful for TASs) other than the ones mentioned in my run at
forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/nikujin__segmented_speedrun_212_finished.html
Most importantly is the spike thing. Spikes let you be on them for 1 frame before they kill you, so if you're completely off them by the next frame you can survive. In some places they will still kill you, though, for whatever reason. It works with all directions of spikes, but I only use it on ceiling and floor spikes in this run.
Second is another use for the double slash. If you double slash immediately after flipping up from a ceiling, you will save 3 frames. You'll also grab onto the wall a little higher up.
And last, I found another way to perfom the mid-high jump (that's the 3.5 block high jump). If you press up or down simultaneously with jump, you will mid-high jump. This is a more useful way of performing it, because before the only way was to be holding left and right and then jump at least a frame later.
Also, a note about the sound. I was playing the game with threads disabled, because I thought it would crash if I didn't... But when I went to record it to AVI, I enabled threads with the Wrap option, and it recorded sound effects fine (but no music) without crashing. I'm on XP. Then I just edited the music on top for the heck of it.
