I was 11 years old when Emerson, Lake & Palmer released Tarkus. The record opens with a long, floating soundscape, almost suspended in the air. Even today, this introduction still feels magical to me — mysterious and powerful, as if it were announcing that something extraordinary was about to happen. And suddenly that ostinato bursts in like a tank on a battlefield.
When I was 15, my father bought me a Farfisa VIP 500 organ. With all sorts of improvised engineering tricks, I ran the Farfisa through a distortion pedal and a tape echo unit. And at least in my head, it started to sound a little bit like Keith Emerson’s organ.
For some reason, I’ve always associated the opening of Tarkus with another powerful introduction that marked my teenage years: the beginning of Close to the Edge by Yes.
But that is another story.
